Lester Tied for Lead at Oglethorpe Royal
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. ---- The no. 2 ranked Huntingdon men’s golf team finished two strokes behind host Oglethorpe in the first-round of the Oglethorpe Royal Lakes Invitational at the Royal Lakes Golf Course. Freshman Jamey Lester led the charge for the Hawks firing a three-under par 68 and tied for first place.
The Hawks finished the opening round with a team total three-over par 287 behind only Oglethorpe, who shot a team total one-over par 285. Methodist finished the day third with a team total eight-over par 292, followed by LaGrange with a nine-over par 293. Costal Georgia rounded out the day one top-five, after posting a team total twelve-over par 296.
The story of the day was freshman Jamey Lester’s three-under par 68, finishing his best collegiate round of golf tied for 1st place. Chase Blaich finished the opening round tied for 6th place with an even par 71. Rodes Bowers shot a two-over par 73, finishing tied for 17th place.
Rounding out the scoring for Huntingdon on day one was J.P. Kircher and Cates Culpepper each carding a four-over par 75, to finish tied for 27th place.
Head coach Matt Mahanic was pleased with his team’s performance in the opening round, especially with freshman Jamey Lester. “I’m proud of the way Jamey came out and played his best collegiate performance so far in his young career,” said Mahanic.
Lester and the Hawks will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 19 for a shot at winning the tournament on the final day of the Royal Lakes Invitational at Royal Lakes Country Club in Flowery Branch, Ga.
