MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- The Huntingdon Volleyball team is excited to continue on last year’s success. The Lady Hawks finished 18-13 a year ago, finishing third in the Great South Athletic Conference.
Entering the fifth season as head coach, Megan Aiello is expecting the 2010 newcomers to gel well with the veterans on the squad. “We’re excited to have the upper classmen leadership and experience combined with a talented freshman class this season,” said Aiello.
The Lady Hawks will hit the floor this week with the experience of returning three-time All-Great South Athletic Conference senior Clare Shannon. “We’re expecting Clare to bring the consistency of her game into her senior year, just as she has performed the previous three seasons,” said head coach Megan Aiello.
Shannon anchored the Lady Hawks’ offensive attack, posting a team-leading 263 kills in 2009. She also added 213 digs, a mark which ranked third on the team, while leading the squad with 68 service aces. The Birmingham native also finished with 26 total blocks, including five solos.
This year’s incoming freshmen look to bring their skills to the Lady Hawks team. Coach Aiello is excited about how the newcomers competed during camp and may be able to make immediate impacts on the team. “Kelly (Kahumoku) is expected to play immediately for our team,” said Aiello. Kahumoku begins her first season with the Lady Hawks coming out of Enterprise Prep Academy.
Abby Brown and Mallorie Richardson are two other newcomers that Coach Aiello expects to play early and often this year. “Both Abby and Mallorie are looking to come on strong for us this season,” said head coach Megan Aiello. Freshman Abby Brown comes to the Lady Hawks from Haleyville, Ala. and newcomer Mallorie Richardson played her prep career at Southside High School.
Seniors Christine Whiten and Krissie Jones were selected as the 2010 team captains. They are expected to lead the team as well as the developing freshmen class. “Christine and Krissie will both provide the leadership this team needs to be successful this year,” said Coach Aiello.
Also, returning for the Lady Hawks is junior Alyssa Eason who has been the setter on the team for the last couple seasons.
The Lady Hawks are looking to contend for a conference championship in 2010. “We expect to battle against Maryville and Peidmont for the Great South Athletic Conference championship this year,” said Aiello.
The Huntingdon Volleyball team will open the season on the road against Rust College in Birmingham, Ala. on Sept. 4th at 12 p.m. The Lady Hawks will tour the majority of the month of September on the road, but they will return for the home season opener on Sept. 23rd against Pensacola Christian at 6 p.m. in the Catherine Dixon Roland Areana.
