February 15, 2009 --- Junior Alex Sanford tossed six innings of one-hit ball and Shawn Bezwiechin launched a two-run home run to lead the Huntingdon baseball team past Rhodes, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Posey Field.
Sanford allowed only one unearned run during the six frames, walking four and striking out seven, to pick up his first victory of the season. Bezwiechin finished with two of the Hawks (3-2) three hits, while also scoring a pair of runs.
Huntingdon jumped out to a 3-1 lead following the Bezwieching homer in the fourth inning. The Hawks plated a run in each of the next two innings, on a single up the middle by senior John Otterson in the fifth and on a fielding error by the Lynx in the sixth.
With a 5-1 lead and with Sanford having thrown more than 100 pitches for the game, the Hawks went to the pen in the top of the seventh.
Senior Casey Garner tossed 2/3 of an inning, allowing a run, before giving way to junior Gary Frazier, who worked out of a two-out jam and retired the side. Frazier allowed a run in each of the final two innings, but picked up his first save of the season.
Travis Perkins, Mason Mosby and Brandon Valentine each recorded a pair of hits for the Lynx (4-2). Taylor Babich took the loss, allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings, despite allowing only three hits.
Huntingdon will return to action on Friday, February 20, when it travels to Fayetteville , N.C. , where it will play five games in three days, beginning with nationally-ranked Lynchburg . First pitch against the Hornets is scheduled for 11 a.m. CST.
