Davis Named AUM Women’s Basketball Coach

By Adam Bagni

MONTGOMERY—Dan Davis has had the “interim” tag removed from his title and has been named Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Auburn University at Montgomery.

Davis led the Lady Senators in the 2008-09 season as the interim head coach following the resignation of former coach Steve Crotz who became AUM’s Athletic Director.

“Coach Davis possesses all the attributes the committee was seeking,” Crotz said. “Dan has boundless passion for coaching basketball and teaching his players. He embraces the priority of academic achievement and the value of community service. I am confident Coach Davis is a credit to our athletic department, university and community.”

The Lady Senators finished last season with a 20-9 record and finished second in the Southern States Athletic Conference with a 15-5 record. For his efforts, Davis received the SSAC Coach of the Year award. AUM was ranked 25th in the nation in the final NAIA poll and made a trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

“It is a real honor and privilege to be the new head women’s basketball coach at AUM,” Davis said. “This program has such a rich tradition in basketball as well as a terrific academic reputation. I am very excited to lead my alma mater.”

Davis becomes the fourth head coach in the 22-year history of the women’s basketball program. Colby Tilley was the first head coach spending eight seasons (1986-95) at the helm of the program. Pam Skinner spent one season as the interim head coach (1995-96) before Steve Crotz was hired to lead the program (1996-2008).

“It is great to have the interim tag removed and know all the hard work this past year has paid off,” Davis said. “I look forward to building on what we have accomplished this past season and taking the program to the next level. We have a great group of talented ladies coming back and six incoming freshman.”

Davis graduated from AUM in 1999 with a B.S. in secondary education. He was a four-year member of the AUM basketball team under legendary head coach Larry Chapman.

He started his coaching career at South Gwinnett High School where he was the coach of the junior varsity team and the assistant varsity coach (1999-2000). He then moved on to Grayson High School where he started the boy’s basketball program and served as the head coach from 2000-2002.

He then spent the next five years at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Ga. He coached the girl’s varsity basketball team (2002-07) and served in the dual role as athletic director his final two years there.

He came back to AUM in 2007 as the assistant coach for the women’s program (2007-08) before taking over the interim duties last season.

“AUM is a special place and I am humbled and honored to be part of this great University,” Davis said. “I look forward to working hard and continuing to build this program the right way on the court, in the classroom and in the community.”
