Shields Named All-American

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Cody Shields, Panama City, Fla., has been named to the 2009 NAIA Baseball All-America Second Team.



Shields, the Southern States Athletic Conference Male Athlete and Baseball Player of the Year, led Auburn University at Montgomery at the plate with a .461 batting average. He had seven homeruns, nine triples, 13 doubles and 43 RBI, all from his leadoff position in the lineup. Shields also had 25 stolen bases with an on-base percentage of .512 and a slugging percentage of .685. Defensively, Shields was just as good, as he received the SSAC Gold Glove award for his play in centerfield.



He led the conference in total hits, hits per game, triples and at bats. He was also in the top five in runs, slugging percentage, total bases and stolen bases.



Shields also did well nationally, leading the nation in total triples with nine. He was in the top 15 in total hits, batting, hits per game and at bats.



Shields .461 batting average this season, tied the single-season school record set by former AUM All-American, Junior Kelley in 2007. His nine triples are the second-most in single-season school history, only topped by Brett Holmes 10 in 2003. He is only the third person in AUM history to record over 100 hits in a single season.
