AUM Baseball Wins Opening Round Game

COLUMBUS, Ga.—Bruce Alter had three hits and two RBI to lead Auburn University at Montgomery to a 10-7 win over Faulkner University in the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.
AUM jumped on Faulkner starter Austin Adams for 10 hits and seven runs in the first four innings. Alter started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with the first of two doubles to score Cody Shields and Justin Williams. AUM added another run on a Faulkner error to take a 3-0 lead after one.
AUM pushed the lead to 4-0 in the third after Alter led the inning off with his second double. He scored later in the inning on a Cody Chizmar ground out.
Faulkner would not go away as it scored four runs off AUM starter Stephen Yates (8-3) in the fourth inning. Yates struggled in the inning walking two Eagle batters with bases loaded to go along with three Faulkner hits and a hit batsman.
AUM scored four runs in the bottom of the inning with RBI hits from Tanner Williams, Chizmar and Shane Moye.
Again, Faulkner would not go away scoring three runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 8-7. Michael Colley opened the inning with a double and Cody Bridgeman walked sending Yates to the bench. Brock Piper came in and struggled at first walking Josh Lock to load the bases. Kevin Leslie then singled to score a run and Piper walked Chris Myles to walk in a run. Piper then unloaded a wild pitch allowing the final run of the inning to score.
AUM did score a single run in the bottom of the sixth on a Justin Williams RBI single and another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Chizmar to score David Barnett.
During these innings Piper settled down and set the Eagles down in order in the eighth and ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
AUM out hit Faulkner 16-7 as Chizmar finished the game with three RBI on two hits and Justin Williams had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs. Tanner Williams had two hits and an RBI while Cody Shields had two hits and scored a run. Clay Booth finished the game going three-for-four at the plate.
Colley had two hits with an RBI and scored two runs to lead Faulkner.
AUM is now 33-19 on the season and will play the winner of the Berry College and Brewton-Parker game tomorrow at 4 p.m.
