Shields Named Player of the Year

MONTGOMERY—Cody Shields has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year. The senior from Panama City, Fla., led the conference in hits with 89 and hit .464 on the season.

From his lead-off position in the lineup, Shields hit eight doubles, eight triples and added five homeruns. He also scored 62 runs, had 37 RBI and stole 22 bases.

Joining Shields on the first team was senior Daniel Holder, Dothan. Holder finished the season with a 10-2 record on the mound. His 10 pitching wins led the conference. He had a 2.82 earned run average and had 74 strikeouts in 83 innings pitched.

Named to the second team were Cody Chizmar, Panama City, Fla., Michael Dugan, Montgomery, Justin Williams, Ozark and Stephen Yates, Birmingham.

The Senators also had three players named to the Gold Gove team for their defensive work. Shields was named to the team for his work in the outfield, Holder for his work on the mound and Williams for his work in the infield at both first and second base.

The Senators had six players named to the All-Academic team. They were Bruce Alter, Montgomery, Robby Davis, Gadsden, Dugan, Trey Haisten, Wetumpka, Carlton Melton, Mobile and Yates.
