TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Incoming University of Alabama freshman softball player and Tuscaloosa native Olivia Gibson has been named a second-team EA Sports All-American.
Gibson garnered the All-America honor after compiling a .567 (60 for 106) average as a senior in 2008. She led Tuscaloosa Academy to its fourth straight AISA State Championship. She was also named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association Super All-State team and was named the AISA Player of the Year.
Gibson wasn’t alone in the Crimson Tide’s heralded five-player incoming recruiting class as Cassandra Reilly-Boccia, Kendall Dawson, Jazlyn Lunceford and Jennifer Fenton have all been recognized with numerous honors following their senior seasons of high school.
“All five incoming young ladies had terrific senior seasons,” Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy said. “I believe all five will be ready to go when we open fall preseason workouts and practices. What a great honor for Olivia and for her teammates and coaches at Tuscaloosa Academy softball."
The Crimson Tide ventured into the state of New York for the first time for outfielder/first baseman Reilly-Boccia. A two-time first-team New York State Softball Writers Association All-State honoree and the 2008 Gatorade New York Player of the Year, Reilly-Boccia hit .495 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and a .923 slugging percentage.
Dawson turned in a tremendous senior season at Plant City (Fla.) High School, earning first-team All-State honors from the Florida Sports Writers Association after garnering second-team honors as a junior. Dawson led 6A District 8 with a .440 batting average while compiling eight doubles a home run. She slugged .660 with a .491 on-base percentage and struck out just four times all season.
Lunceford, another local product out of Tuscaloosa County High School, was named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association First-Team 6A All-State team.
Center fielder Jennifer Fenton, a Marietta, Ga., native earned her third Georgia High School Association All-State honor and was named the Region 5A Player of the Year for Kennesaw Mountain High School.
Alabama will begin preparations for the 2009 campaign on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when fall practice opens at the Alabama Softball Complex. The Crimson Tide’s three fall game dates are Sunday, Oct. 19, and Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25-26. The Alabama softball team will also sign autographs prior to the Ole Miss football game on Saturday, Oct. 18, on the Quad.
