Biscuits End Skid, Split Doubleheader

By Adam Bagni

HOOVER, AL - The Biscuits split a doubleheader with the Birmingham Barons on Friday night at Regions Park, snapping a 12-game losing skid to the Barons with a 4-3 win in game one and enduring a 7-3 loss in game two. The win in game one also allowed the Biscuits to avoid a five-game sweep in the series.

After losing a pair of leads in game one, the Biscuits finally plated the run that put the Barons away in the top of the seventh inning. With Ricky Brooks on in relief, J.T. Hall singled to start the rally. Brandon Chaves then sacrificed him to second. He scored the game-winning run a batter later when Chris Nowak contributed his third hit of the night, pulling the Biscuits ahead for good, 4-3. Brooks (3-1) was tagged with the loss as the Biscuits snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Barons and claimed their first win of the series.

The Biscuits nabbed their first lead off of Barons' starter Kyle McCulloch in the second inning. Cody Cipriano led off the inning with a single and moved to third a batter later when Cody Strait singled. Hall then sent what looked like a double-play ball to second base, but Birmingham couldn't complete the double-play, and Hall reached safely. Cipriano scored on the play, putting Montgomery in front, 1-0.

Birmingham squared the ballgame with their only run off of Biscuits' starter Brandon Mann in the fourth inning. John Shelby III singled to start the frame and C.J. Retherford doubled behind him to put runners at second and third with nobody down. Christian Marrero then lifted a sacrifice-fly to right field to tie the game, 1-1. Mann escaped further harm in the inning.

Montgomery surged back in front in the sixth inning with a pair of runs off McCulloch. Nowak singled to start the inning and Jose Lobaton doubled down the right-field line. On the play, an error on the throw into second base allowed Nowak to score to give the lead back to the Biscuits. Cipriano then cracked the first pitch to right field for a single, scoring Lobaton and putting the Biscuits in front, 3-1.

The lead was short-lived as the Barons came back in the bottom of the sixth against Biscuits' reliever Matt Gorgen. Gorgen recorded the first out of the inning before issuing back-to-back walks to Shelby III and Retherford. Marrero contributed an RBI single and David Cook tied the game, 3-3, when he singled back up the middle. Gorgen (2-1) wound up winning despite his troubles as the Biscuits rallied for the win in the top of the seventh inning.

Paul Phillips earned his seventh save of the season as he worked a scoreless bottom the seventh inning, which included a pair of the strikeouts.

Game two started with a bang for Birmingham, as the first two batters both launched doubles on one hop off the left-center field wall off of Biscuits' starter Brian Baker. Shelby III started the rally and Retherford quickly brought him in for the lead, 1-0. Baker got the first two outs of the inning without Retherford advancing, but Dayan Viciedo sent a two-out single back up the middle to plate Retherford for a 2-0 lead. Jim Gallagher then launched a two-run home run to right-center field, capping the inning at 4-0 Barons.

The Biscuits got on the board against Barons' starter Charlie Shirek in the third inning of the second game. Jason Bowers doubled with one out in the inning and was balked to third base by Shirek. Rashad Eldridge brought him in with a bounce-out to second base to cut the Barons' lead to 4-1.

Matt Fields led off the fifth inning with a massive solo-home run to left field off of Shirek, trimming the Barons' advantage to 4-2. Shirek (6-4) worked through the rest of the inning without incurring further damage and earned the win over five innings.

Baker (5-5) departed after 4 1/3 innings and took the loss for Montgomery. He allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in that time. The final three runs scored as the Barons put the game away in the fifth inning. The inning was highlighted for Birmingham by Retherford's double off Baker and Gallagher's two-run double off Heath Rollins after he had relieved Baker.

Montgomery got one run back in the sixth inning, but fell to Birmingham for the 20th time on the season, closing out the 24-game season-series with the Barons at a record of 4-20.

The Biscuits open a five-game series with the Huntsville Stars at Joe Davis Stadium on Saturday night at 6:00 PM. RHP Aneury Rodriguez (7-10, 4.60) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Dave Bush (0-1, 15.00), making an MLB rehab start for Huntsville.
