Barons Wait for Game Two Win
MONTGOMERY, AL - After a rain-delay of one hour and 15 minutes, the Birmingham Barons claimed a 5-3 win over the Biscuits on Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Barons grabbed the lead with a lone run off Biscuits' starter Heath Rollins in the second inning. David Cook singled to start the inning and Dayan Viciedo followed with a hit-and-run single to move Cook to third. Javier Colina grounded into a double-play, but Cook scored on the play for a 1-0 lead.
Jared Price ripped a solo-home run off Rollins to begin the third inning and Birmingham doubled their advantage, 2-0.
Joe Gaetti got that run back for the Biscuits in the fifth inning. He crushed an offering from Barons' starter John Ely well over the wall in left field to put Montgomery on the board, 2-1.
The Barons fired right back in the sixth as Rob Hudson snapped Heath Rollins consecutive batters retired streak at nine with a triple to open the inning. He scored a batter later when Chris Nowak misplayed a ground ball to third base. C.J. Retherford reached on the back-end of the play and eventually scored on an RBI single from Viciedo. Colina capped the inning with a sacrifice fly and the Barons led, 5-1.
Ely walked Brandon Chaves to open the sixth inning and it proved a spring-board to two runs for the Biscuits. A batter later, Nowak doubled Chaves to third base and the Biscuits had two aboard with one out. Matt Fields then cracked a two-run single to bring the Biscuits to within two runs, 5-3.
Both starters departed the game after six innings, with Ely (7-1) earning the win while allowing three runs on five hits. Rollins (7-7) was saddled with the loss permitting five runs -- three earned on six hits.
The Biscuits got no closer, as Clevelan Santeliz followed Ely with two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth and Fernando Hernandez earned his 12th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Rayner Oliveros and Paul Phillips combined for three scoreless innings of relief for Montgomery to keep the Biscuits within shouting-distance.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Aneury Rodriguez (4-8, 6.13) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Daniel Hudson (1-0, 3.93) for Birmingham.
