MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biscuits were shutout, 2-0, by the Tennessee Smokies to start the second half on Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Jeremy Hellickson made his first start since May 5th, returning from a shoulder sprain, and looked sharp. He turned in four scoreless innings, allowing four singles, but striking out six. He threw 60 pitches and departed a scoreless ballgame, not factoring in the decision.

Smokies' starter Jay Jackson (4-3) matched zeros with Hellickson and did him one better, turning in five scoreless innings. He struck out five, and allowed just one hit to earn the win for Tennessee.

Tennessee put Jackson in line for the win with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning off of reliever Chris Mason, back for his second inning of service. Jim Adduci singled to start the inning and arrived safely when Mason threw errantly to second on a come-backer from Doug Deeds. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch and as Nevin Ashley tried to cut down Deeds at second he threw wildly into centerfield, allowing Adduci to score the game's first run. With two outs, Russ Canzler singled home Deeds for a 2-0 lead.

Mason (3-4) took the loss for the Biscuits despite allowing only the two unearned runs, working four total innings. He conceded three hits, walked three and struck out four.

Jayson Ruhlman worked a scoreless sixth and seventh before turning the game over to John Gaub, who earned his fourth save of the season for the Smokies, completing the shutout with two scoreless innings.

Ryan Reid struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Biscuits 13 strikeouts on the night, a season-high as a staff.

Game two of the series is scheduled at 7:05 PM on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. LHP Brandon Mann (4-4, 5.20) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Marcos Mateo (1-4, 5.48) for Tennessee.
