CHATTANOOGA, TN - Rhyne Hughes clubbed his first two home runs of the season and Jeremy Hellickson shut out the Chattanooga Lookouts into the sixth inning as the Biscuits cruised to a 9-1 series-opening victory on Tuesday night at AT&T Field.
Hughes got the Biscuits started, launching his first home run off of Chattanooga starter Jesus Castillo (0-1) to lead off the fourth inning and give the Biscuits a 1-0 lead. The blast triggered a five-run inning for Montgomery as J.T. Hall followed with a single. Cesar Suarez then doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Chip Cannon made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Hall. Castillo then got wild, walking both Matt Spring and John Matulia to load the bases. Former Lookout Drew Anderson then scorched a liner back to the mound that ricocheted off of Castillo and caromed away for an RBI-single. Brandon Chaves completed the five-run inning with a two-run single and the Biscuits led 5-0.
Chaves' singles chased Castillo, who was tagged with his first loss of the season, surrendering five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Meanwhile, Hellickson (1-0) was cruising, striking out six over 5 2/3 innings to earn his first win of the season. The right-hander has now turned in 10 2/3 scoreless innings to start the 2009 season.
Cannon padded the lead for the Biscuits with his first home run of the season in the fifth inning. His solo-shot to right field off of reliever Matt Sartor made the score 6-0.
Desmond Jennings doubled to start the sixth and Chaves walked behind him to put two more aboard for Hughes. He promptly sent his second homer of the night to right field for a 9-0 Biscuits' lead. Hughes finished with four RBIs on the night.
Brandon Mann took over for Hellickson in the sixth and took it the rest of the way for the Biscuits. He earned his first save of the season after conceding just a lone unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6:15 CDT at AT&T Field. RHP Aneury Rodriguez (0-1) will make the start for the Biscuits against LHP Scott Elbert (0-0) for Chattanooga.
