MONTGOMERY, AL - The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to steal the season opener from the Biscuits, 7-6, in front of 7,002 fans at Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday night.
Leading 6-4 entering the ninth, the Biscuits called on Eddie Morlan to attempt to slam the door. After recording the first out of inning, Morlan issued back-to-back walks to pinch-hitter Brent Johnson and Jeff Dominguez to put the tying runs aboard. Ezequiel Carrera followed with an RBI-single to make it a one-run game and Morlan then walked Carlos Triunfel to reload the bases. The Biscuits went back to the bullpen for Chris Mason, but his first pitch to Johan Limonta was sent to right field for a single, plating two and serving as the game-winner. Morlan (0-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season.
The Biscuits had erased a 4-3 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. They managed the rally without the benefit of a hit, receiving five walks and a hit batsman to account for their three runs. Mumba Rivera (1-0) earned the win, despite walking a run in and hitting Rhyne Hughes to force in another.
Aaron Cotter finished off the win for the Diamond Jaxx, holding the Biscuits scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory and earn his first save of the season.
Montgomery squandered a solid outing from opening day starter Jeremy Hellickson, who logged five shutout innings, while allowing just two hits and striking out three.
The two teams combined to use 12 pitchers, who combined to walk 18 batters and hit three men.
John Matulia gave the Biscuits a 3-0 lead when he hit his first home run of the season, a solo-shot to right field leading off the sixth inning. His drive was answered by Adam Moore, who also sent his first home run of the season to right field leading off the seventh against Calvin Medlock.
Cesar Suarez knocked in the first run of the season with an RBI-double in the fifth inning, and Jason Bowers made it 2-0 when he followed with an RBI-single.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium as RHP Aneury Rodriguez will make his Biscuits debut against RHP Ricky Orta for West Tenn.
