JACKSON, Tenn. - The Montgomery Biscuits (34-29; 68-65) swept a doubleheader from the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (27-36; 68-65) at Pringles Park Wednesday night, winning 10-2 and 3-0 with a fantastic mix of hitting, pitching and defense.
Unfortunately, the sweep did not help the Biscuits to gain any ground on the division-leading Mississippi Braves, who also swept a doubleheader against the Mobile BayBears to remain 4 1/2 games above the Biscuits with six games to go. The Braves' magic number shrunk to two.
Four Biscuits pitchers collaborated on a shutout in the second game, with starter James Houser pitching three innings and relievers Eddie Morlan (2 IP, win), Roger Deago (1 IP, hold) and Steve Andrade (1 IP, save) adding in their scoreless relief.
The Biscuits led that game after two hitters and never relinquished the lead. Rashad Eldridge tripled in the first inning and scored on a Johnny Raburn groundout. Montgomery added another run against West Tenn starter Luis Munoz in the sixth on a triple by Erold Andrus and tacked on one more run against reliever Doug Fister in the seventh on a Neil Walton single.
Andrus turned in the defensive play of the year in the first inning in support of Houser. With the bases loaded and one out, Marshall Hubbard hit a towering flyball to right field. Andrus made the catch as Mark Kiger tagged up at third base and Johan Limonta tagged at second. From deep right field, Andrus rifled his throw to third base on the fly, where Pat Cottrell tagged out Limonta before Kiger crossed home. The play was the Jaxx's last real scoring chance.
It was Andrus' league-leading 13th outfield assist.
A six-run sixth inning helped the Biscuits to victory in the first game, a game that was tied at one until the frame. Montgomery did all of the damage against the Diamond Jaxx bullpen, as Walton, Craig Albernaz and Gaby Martinez all collected RBI doubles and Josh Asanovich plated a run with a single.
Albernaz went 3-for-4 in the game, adding two more RBIs in the seventh inning with his first career triple.
The six-run inning made a winner of starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, who tossed five innings and allowed a run on six hits. He struck out nine en routw to his fourth victory.
The two teams finish out the series with a rubber game on Thursday. Biscuits lefty Mike Prochaska opposes West Tenn lefthander Ed Paredes at 7:05 p.m.
