Fairways of the River Region: Faulkner Eagles

By Brian Penter

In this week's Fairways of the River Region series, we take a look at the Faulkner Eagles, who, thanks to some local- and international- talent, are soaring high.

The Faulkner Eagles are playing their best golf at just the right time. They head into this weekend's SSAC Tournament having won three straight tournaments and are ranked 8th in the country.

Even though golf is an individual sport, it's a great team chemistry that's driving Faulkner's success.

Junior Hunter Fikes says, "You want everyone to do well. You love everybody, we're all brothers. So, of course you want everyone to do well on the team and I think that helps because we're all supporting each other. It's not just you're out there by yourself. I think that's a great thing."

The Eagles are led by a couple of Alabama players but also feature several international players.

Icelander Hrafn Gudlaugsson has been a key contributor and he has enjoyed being a part of this close-knit bunch.

How did Gudlaughsson get from Iceland to central Alabama?

"(Joking) Usually I fly... I think the team, there's a lot of competition. We all work hard to make the team and in the end I think that helps us a lot."

Coming up next, Faulkner will have home-field advantage for their conference tournament, which will tee off at Lagoon Park on Monday.
