Are Fans Expecting Too Much From Auburn Football This Season?

By Ashley Thompson

After winning the BCS National Championship in 2010 Auburn has struggled, even going 3 and 9 last season. Now, with a new coach, are fans expecting too much for this upcoming season?

"Last year was pretty rough, I have to say," says Auburn fan Grant Watson.

Now, with a new head coach, fans appear to have a new outlook on the team. But are expectations a bit too high for the team that's currently rebuilding?

"My expectations are always high," says alumna Starla Burell. "And you know, that's what I tell people all the time, for Auburn people, it's so much more than just football."

Head Coach Gus Malzahn tells us he's feeling some pressure but knows how to cater to this fan base.

"I was here for three years previously," he says. "Three of the best years of my life. I love Auburn. I understand Auburn and I understand the pressures that go with it."

He says this season, he intends to take things one game at a time.

"The only thing we're focusing on is Washington State and that's the only thing on our mind. They're a good team."

Though some fans are seeing way past just the first game.

"Like I told coach Malzahn, I just want to win the next game," says fan Darren Hendley. "So the first game, and then the next one, then the next one."

"I think that we're going to be in shape," says President of the Auburn Montgomery Club Kimberly Mathews. "I think that we're going to be fit and I don't think this team is going to quit."

And most fans tell us they're relying on coach Malzahn to get the job done.

"I think Malzahn can do a lot of good things," says Watson.

"We know there's growing pains that go with any kind of change and we love Gus Malzahn," Burrell says.

"You've got to aim high and that's what we're looking for," says Hendley.

The first practice for the Auburn Football team is this friday.
