Fire Destroys Montgomery Church

By Lisa Blackwell

When Pastor Moton arrived at the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church he says he saw smoke coming from the roof. Fire ripped through the structure around five in the morning leaving very little behind.

Thomas Moton, Pastor, Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, says, “It's a shock you know and right now my focus is on Sunday worship, as to why I don't know, I just have to quote scripture or remember the scripture rather, all things work together for the good Romans 8:28.”

Wilbert Sellers, Sr., a member who's as old as this church says for some reason on Sunday he was up and ready to go hours before he needed to be. Little did he know it would be his last service in this church.

“I didn't know it was my last Sunday oh Lord I didn't know”, said Sellers.

As the 102 year old Sellers reflects on fond memories of worship at Pilgrim, other members sifted through the rubble salvaging any little thing they could. Church officials say they will rebuild.

Mae Dansby, a church member, says “We're just leaning and depending on the Lord cause he will see us through this ok.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
