Ex-Deputy Gets Prison in Wilcox Co. Drug Case

By Alabama News Network

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A judge sentenced a former Wilcox County sheriff's deputy to more than seven years in federal prison on drug charges.

Prosecutors say 45-year-old Greg Barge of Camden believed he was transporting cocaine from Montgomery to Camden in his patrol car last year.

But the cocaine was actually fake, and Barge was arrested. He later pleaded guilty to attempting to possess cocaine for distribution and a gun charge.

A judge sentenced the man on Tuesday.

Barge was arrested on June 26, 2013, after what prosecutors say was his third trip from Montgomery to Camden transporting fake cocaine. He was in a sheriff's car and wearing his uniform at the time.
