Right now, there are about 240 government employees in Elmore County, all being housed in what's supposed to fit about a fourth of that. Many of them in tight spaces, like here at the tag office, I'm actually standing in about 3 feet of space...
But the county commission says this will soon change.
For some county employees, the working conditions are just far too crowded...
"Over here are files that we have still not been able to put away we just don't have room to put all this stuff," Said one county employee, Hattie Jean Duke.
"And as you can tell, I can't even spin all the way around without hitting every side," Said another employee, Hannah Hall.
Both Hannah Hall and Hattie Jean Duke work at the Elmore County Courthouse in downtown Wetumpka. That building along with the Highway Department, Judicial Complex, and the Sheriff's Office is where most county employees are found.
Now, a new plan approved by the county commission hopes to give employees in those buildings more space.
"Building a county annex right behind the existing courthouse in downtown, along with a parking deck," Said Elmore Co. Commissioner, Joe Faulk.
Faulk says part of the plan is to move the probate office, revenue commission and county commission inside the annex.
The Highway Department and Sheriff's Office will be expanded. The front of the building at the Sheriff's Office will be remodeled.
The Emergency Operations Center, now under construction, will move E-911 from the judicial complex, opening up more space there.
These are all preliminary plans, so no cost estimates have been made except for the Emergency Operations Center -- that's going to cost about $4.5 million.
Of all of these projects, the Emergency Operations Center is set to finish first, next April.
Construction on the courthouse annex is scheduled to begin in December
Both the highway department and the sheriff's office construction is set to start in January.
