Greenville Police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year after an early morning shooting in Downtown Greenville leaves one man dead and another on the run.
Investigators say an argument early Sunday morning inside Front Street Pub escalated outside onto West Commerce Street. They say 33 year old Marlon Herbert was involved in the argument and got in his car to leave.
Herbert allegedly drove his car in front of the pub, and that is when they say the argument turned deadly, "Another altercation took place in the roadway in front of the pub. And that's when, according to witness statements, a Russell Gregory attempted to pull Marlon Herbert out of his vehicle, or at least got into an altercation with him while he was still in the vehicle, and witnesses say that Marlon then shot Russell Gregory," says Chief Investigator, Justin Lovvorn.
Police say 31 year old Russell Gregory was shot in the head and died on the scene. Herbert left his car and fled the area on foot. Police are still searching for him on the charge of murder, "He was not on the scene we when arrived, and all attempts to locate him at his normal residence and places he's been known to go, he's not been there. We've not been able to find him yet," says Lovvorn.
Investigators say they do not believe Herbert is an extreme hazard to the public and this is an isolated incident.
They also say they regularly get calls about violence at Front Street Pub.
