We have new information tonight in the investigation into a murder in Georgiana. Police say they believe the victim knew the killer... and they're beefing up security in the area.
This incident has really impacted the community -- and with the killer still on the loose, everyone is keeping a close eye on each other.
Last Wednesday, 72-year-old Dorothy Leatherwood was found dead in her home on Wise Street in Georgiana. It's an investigation that's made people in the community cautious as police try to find Leatherwood's murderer.
"Talking to family members and friends in the community there, Mrs. Leatherwood always kept her house locked up. She had very few people that would come over there to visit her. And best we can determine, based on information that we've got, there was no forced entry into the house... that the suspect may have been an aquaintance of hers," Said Butler County Sheriff, Kenny Harden.
The possibility of having a killer in the community has made neighbors more alert of their surroundings. Myzell Cobb has lived in Georgiana for more than 50 years. He says a crime like this doesn't often happen in town.
"It scares me because people, women in Georgiana, the single parents and the staying of women in houses... and it worries me because it's a possibility that something of that kind of stature would happen can happen again," Said Cobb
Which is why Georgiana Police have beefed up security. They say they've started tripling the number of neighborhood patrols in Georgiana.
"We're trying to be out in the neighborhoods even more than usual to give the community a better sense of security. We're doing this day and night trying to make sure that everyone's safe," Said Georgiana police officer, Sgt. J.C. Salter.
Police have not stopped looking for this suspect. They say they do still have a person of interest. Police are still not disclosing the cause of Leatherwood's death. If you have any information, you're asked to call the Butler County Sheriff's Office at 334-382-6521.
