Georgiana Woman's Death Appears To Be Suspicious

CBS 8 spoke to family members, although they chose not to be on camera, but they did tell us that with a town where many people know each other, it's possible someone knew the victim lived alone. Of course, foul play is still being investigated.

Georgiana Police and the Butler County Sheriff's office tells CBS 8 they're investigating a possible homicide. Family, friends and neighbors are shocked because it happened in a neighborhood, they say, is safe.

Butler County Sheriff's deputies and Georgiana police are searching for answers after a 72-year-old woman was found dead in her home on Wise Street in Georgiana Wednesday morning.

Deputies are not releasing a name. They're calling it a death investigation for now, but they say the death appears to be suspicious.

"What had happened was this morning when we first got the call was that some ladies had come to pick her up to go to bible study. They normally do every Wednesday morning and she did not come out. So they went in the house and found the lady lying on the floor," Said Butler County Sheriff, Kenny Harden. He says they do not know the cause of death, but things just didn't look right.

Authorities have been investigating inside the home and around the neighborhood, conducting interviews with family, friends and neighbors. They're all shocked and searching for answers, as well.

"It's very unusual for this kind of stuff to happen in this small community here. Very unusual because everybody knows everybody and that's why I'm so surprised that this happened," Said the victim's neighbor, Red Pugh.

Life-long friend, Herman Cooke, is also stunned. He says he can't believe what's happened.

"Just saw her Sunday. And she was in church, energetic, fun-loving lady. She's just a good person. I miss her. I mean, I miss her already. It's pretty hard," Said Cooke.
