Alabama 1 of 2 Segregating HIV Inmates

By WNCF Staff

JACKSON, MS (WNCF) – Alabama is now one of only two states that separates HIV-positive inmates inside its prisons.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections announced Wednesday that they would end the practice, reducing the number.

The ACLU released a statement saying that the segregation policies in Alabama prisons are a “remnant of the early days of the HIV epidemic and continue to stigmatize prisoners”.

South Carolina is the only other state that currently separates HIV-positive inmates.
