Former NBA And Auburn Basketball Star Arrested In Luverne, Residents React

Wesley Person was a star on the court for years... but the former NBA and Auburn basketball player is now behind bars on a domestic violence charge -- and Crenshaw County residents are reacting.

Luverne Police say Wesley Person, a former NBA and Auburn basketball player, is charged with Assault and domestic violence.

"I'm kind of surprised, I figured he, you know, wouldn't do nothing like that, but you can't ever tell these days and time how people react. I'm surprised... I really am," Said neighbor, Willie Freeman.

Investigators say he was arrested at his Luverne home around 6:30 pm Wednesday. Some neighborhood residents are shocked. Others aren't as surprised.

Crenshaw County Commissioner, Merrill Sport, says he's known Person for over 20 years.

"He's, like I said, very competitive and very successful. And so with that, he can be stubborn, but he's a good guy as far as I'm concerned. You never know what goes on behind closed doors," Said Sport, who is also Person's neighbor.

"Well, I'm a little bit shocked, but I think he's had some of this in his past," Said another neighbor, Mac Wise.

According to, Person was also arrested in January for failing to appear in court for traffic violations, which includes speeding and driving without a license. But in his hometown of Brantley, some residents say he's done a lot for the community and the incident doesn't change their perspective on him.

"It was very exciting and a tribute to be able have someone from this town to become professional in basketball. Not only that and Wesley is retired from basketball now, but there's a lot of great things that he's done for the town and the county," Said Brantley resident, Charles Green.

Person played at Auburn University before being drafted by the NBA in 1994. He played for teams like the Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Caveliers.

Luverne Police Investigators say Person is currently in Crenshaw County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

There's very limited information available right now on his arrest. CBS-8 has tried contacting Luverne's city prosecuter and city attorney, as well. We have yet to receive a call back from them. CBS-8 will keep you updated on information as we receive them.
