Equipment Malfunction Causes Construction Workers To Fall Off Bridge
From Montgomery County -- an accident at the outer loop road project site in Pike Road has killed two workers. Investigators say an equipment malfunction caused them to fall to their deaths.
Montgomery County deputies say the two construction workers were riding in one of these over-hang machines on the outerloop of Highway 80, near the Waugh exit of Interstate 85. They say they were working on a bridge when they fell nearly 100 feet.
Blue lights, hard hats and white tarps.
Jeremy Lee, who works on the same site where the scene was found, says it's a sight that's beyond a nightmare.
Lee says he did not see them fall, but he knew one of the construction workers for the last 17 years.
"He's been knowing me ever since I was about five or six years old and just growing up... being around him... and it's been a priviledge to work with him. And it's just real hard right now," Said Lee.
The Sheriff Marshall says they're still investigating how this accident happened. Meanwhile, they'll be interviewing witnesses.
He says an autopsy will be performed on the bodies to check if there were any other factors in the workers' deaths.
