Memorial Set for Bus Driver Killed in AL Bunker Drama
A memorial is planned for the school bus driver who was slain a year ago during a bunker standoff in southeast Alabama.
The event honoring 66-year-old Charles Poland Jr. will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Dale County High School in Midland City, just a few miles from the scene of the hostage drama.
A gunman boarded Poland's bus on Jan. 29, 2013, demanding children.
Poland was shot to death after refusing to hand over any kids. He's since been hailed as a hero.
But Jimmy Lee Dykes grabbed then-5-year-old Ethan Gilman off the bus and held him in an underground bunker for six days before FBI agents stormed the shelter and killed Dykes.
Ethan is now 6, and his older brother says the boy will attend the memorial.
