Troy Residents are Beating the Heat

The mercury is rising. This weekend the heat index will hit 100 degrees. So what will you do to stay cool?

We all can agree, it's hot out there and it's only going to get worse. This weekend will be the hottest yet.

CBS 8 News talked with residents around Troy to find out how they plan on beating the heat these next couple days.

The pools are packed and folks are finding any way to stay cool.

Summer has officially arrived, and this weekend will be the hottest we've seen since last year.

"It is hot! The sun is shining right on my arms," says resident Dink Stephens. "Stay cool. Get in the air coniditioning. Stay in the shade. Drink some ice water."

But Milky Moo's Ice Cream Shop owner Felicia James is looking forward to the sweltering temperatures. She's predicting she'll make more than a $1,000 in ice cream alone this weekend serving 500 scoops of this frozen treat.

"Kids come in all the time," says James. "They need to cool down and the best way to cool down is to eat ice cream!"

Health officials are asking you to drink plenty of water this weekend, even if you don't feel thirsty. They say it's best to avoid beverages containing alcohol, caffeine or high amounts of sugar.

They are also advising you to avoid strenuous activity this weekend during the sun's peak hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you need to do yard work, they say the best time is early in the morning.
