A Birmingham man is taking strides to promote literacy. This morning, Doctor Artis Murphy completed a trek he began eight and a half days ago. He hiked from Birmingham to the steps of the state capitol to raise awareness. There are over 92 thousand students in Alabama who scored at the lowest levels in reading on the Stanford Achievement Test.

DR. Artis Murphy says...

"WE CAN DO BETTER THEN THIS...TOGETHER WE CAN WIN. SO, HOPEFULLY GOD WILL ALLOW ME TO TAKE THIS TEN YEAR WALK AND MAKE IT TURN INTO A LET'S READ ALABAMA CAMPAIGN IS WHAT I WANT TO DO AFTER THIS YEAR."

This was Doctor Murphy's tenth Birmingham to Montgomery walk.
He will further his promotion of literacy in the state tomorrow with a meeting at the capitol beginning at noon.
