Pike County Schools Launch New App for Smart Phones
Your smart phone isn't just for checking out the latest arcade games. One Alabama school district is using today's technology to connect with parents and the community. With the click of a button, parents in Pike County can check out today's lunch menu or this weekend's sports schedules.
School officials say this smart phone app is the first of its kind. "We think we might be the first public school in the state of Alabama to have actually developed the app,” said Stephanie Snyder, Tech Coordinator for Pike County Schools.
Using the app, parents can find detailed calendars, classroom information, and even spelling lists. “It’s not the information wasn't already available, it's just you had to have a computer in front of you. You had to be at work at your computer or at home at home at your computer, and you had to take the time to log on and go look up all the information,” said Snyder
Parents like Dina Elmore, who also teaches at Goshen Elementary, say the app is a good choice for on-the-go parents. "We're in the car and we're driving to a soccer game, I can pull up that app very quickly, while his father's driving us, and we can go over spelling words in transit on the way to the game,” said Elmore.
Meanwhile, Pike County school administrators say they’re using it to be sure parents get important messages. "So many notes have gone home and are still in book bags to this day, so now parents, wherever they are, they can access that information,” said Lee Scott, Assistant Principal of Goshen Elementary.
Goshen Elementary School Principal Wanda Corley says the school has already begun using the app to communicate with students and parents. "Last night we were able to just with a touch of a finger invite parents to our federal programs night and they could be at a ball game, they didn't have to be at their desk and they were able to receive that message from us,” she said.
The Pike County School system paid a one-time fee of $15,000 to launch the new system.
School officials tell us most of that came from local businesses...who bought ad space on the app. Additional advertising space is available for companies who would like to participate. All ad revenue will go to fund additional technological improvements within the school system.
The Pike County Schools app is now available for free download on both iPhone and Android smart phones.
