Recreational Boater Access Could Soon Be Restricted on Alabama River
From the CBS 8 West Alabama Newsroom-- Recreational boating along two Alabama river systems could soon be restricted-- due to federal budget cutbacks and debt reduction.
Access to locks along the Alabama River may soon be reduced to use by commercial vessels only.
The Army Corps of Engineers will make a decision on the matter in less than a month.
But word of possible restrictions-- isn't sitting too well with recreational boaters in Selma.
"I'm against along with a lot of my partners and friends, and them not allowing us access to the Alabama River which is our river, I mean we are residents of the United States and the state of Alabama and we should have full access as was promised us when they put these locks in, if they close these locks that takes our access away," said boating enthusiast Kenny Ross.
The Chattahoochee River system which forms the southern half of the Alabama-Georgia state line is also facing access restrictions.
