State Representative Yvonne Kennedy Dies at Age 67

One of the longest serving members in the Alabama State House, Representative Yvonne Kennedy of Mobile passed away at the age of 67.
House of Representative Spokesman Clay Redden said Kennedy died at UAB hospital in Birmingham Saturday. The cause of her death is still unknown even though Kennedy had undergone medical testing.
Kennedy was first elected to state legislature in 1979, she was also a former chair of the Legislative Black Caucus.

"I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our colleague and friend Representative Yvonne Kennedy," House Speaker Mike Hubbard released in a statement, sending condolences and prayers to Kennedy's family and district.

"She was a respected colleague and a tireless advocate for education in Alabama," he said.

Under state law, Governor Robert Bentley must order a special election to fill the vacancy created by her death.
