Wright Brothers Park Officially Open
Montgomery's newest park, featuring a replica of the famous Wright Brothers plane, is finally open.
Overlook Park got a face lift and is now named Wright Brothers Park.
It's been almost two weeks since the replica plane was installed here.
Today's commemoration highlighted just how much aviation has impacted the Montgomery area.
Montgomery's history with the Wright Brothers goes all the way back to 1910 when they opened the nation's first civilian flying school here.
Today's dedication let everyone connect with a living part of that history, the brothers great niece Amanda Wright Lane.
"As a girl who comes from a historic family I love the idea of where this is going to take us next, this technology, so for me I think about the young men and women at maxwell air force base serving their countries," said Lane.
The commander of those men and women at Maxwell was on hand to commemorate the day as well. He says it's important to remember the roots the wright brothers planted 100 years ago.
"There's a tremendous connection not just between the city of montgomery and the wright brothers but our united states air force and the wright brothers. Maxwell air force base grew out of the brother's flying school," said General David Fadok.
The brothers great niece was glad to see the plane recreated in its full size, letting people in Montgomery see just what carried man on his first flight.
"This gives you an idea of the scale of the airplane. Even though this is built of metal you can see how fragile it was, and what it must have been like for a pilot to lie on his stomach and fly this thing. It was no easy task. This gives people real appreciation for what it was really like," said Lane.
