"World's Widest Yard Sale' to be Held Along HWY 80

By Morgan Hightower

State leaders announced plans for an event Monday they say will lure bargain hunters from across the state.

It’s the ‘World's Widest Yard Sale’ and its happening along Highway 80.

The Alabama Rural Development Office is hosting the three-day event that will run along the highway from Phenix City to Cuba, Alabama.

Along the way, vendors will set up shop selling unique treasures.

Ron Sparks, Director of the office, says there will be items ranging from crafts, to antiques to baked goods and home-grown vegetables.

He hopes it will stimulate the economy across the black belt region of the state and give visitors a reason to come to Alabama.

This is the first year, but not the first of its kind.

The state is home to the ‘World's Longest Yard Sale’ too - that stretches from Gadsden to Michigan.

“In DeKalb County, which is in the northeast corner of the state, has somewhere between 35 and 40,000 people that come through there and we would certainly hope to see that number much larger as we travel across Highway 80,” said Ron Sparks, Director, Alabama Rural Development Office.

The yard sale will be held May 31st through June 2nd.

No participates. Came from Georgia. Traveled miles before one person selling. This was a total flop. Will never go again on this one.
