Wilcox Co. Deputy Arrested by Feds

By George McDonald

From the West Alabama Newsroom--  A Wilcox County deputy finds himself on the wrong side of the law -- after he's arrested for transporting drugs.

Sheriff Earnest Evans says veteran officer Gregory Barge was arrested and taken into federal custody by the FBI Wednesday evening. The arrest came from an ongoing federal drug investigation spanning several months.

Federal authorities say Barge transported what he believed to be kilograms of cocaine from Montgomery to Camden for cash -- on three separate occasions. They say Barge was in uniform and used his squad car -- to pick up and deliver the fake drugs.

Sheriff Evans says Barge has been a Wilcox County deputy for more than ten years.

"Because we are a small department it's just tough for us because one of our people have been arrested. We are here to do a job for the citizens of Wilcox County and if this what it takes, its what it takes," said Evans.

Barge is facing a minimum of 5 years in prison -- if he's convicted.
