What's On Hunters' Shopping Lists This Season?

It's a big weekend for outdoor and hunting stores across the state. That's because Alabama's archery deer season begins next week. Businesses expect to get hundreds of customers and thousands of dollars.

"Cross bows are getting really popular over the past couple of years because they are 100 percent legal now and you can use magnified scopes on them," said Lance Watts with Bass Pro Shops in Prattville.

Other hunters aren't looking for high-ticket items, but they're still shopping.

"If you're like me, you lose your broadhead, so you've got to buy a new broadhead and field tips and arrows, because I break them," said Austin Alford.

Store managers say people are looking for more personalized items this year, including clothes for women.

"I do like that because i have worn children's clothes and men's clothes just don't fit women correctly, so I think it's great," said Mistie Mashburn.

Academy Sports and Outdoors in Prattville is also getting ready for the rush. they expect to see more than 1,200 customers this weekend, looking for hunting accessories.

"Liquid products, like their scent-a-ways and stuff like that. Sometimes traps for their new tree stands or old tree stands as they start to wear away, as well as new camouflage. Camouflage tends to wear out a lot faster than a lot of people think," said Brendan Swanson with Academy.

According to trade groups, the hunting industry employs more than a million people across the country. More than 16,000 of those jobs are in Alabama.
