Weeds Overtake Historic Lincoln Cemetery

By Josh Ninke

It looks like a jungle here at Lincoln Cemetery. Even though the graves are hard to spot, the problem hasn't gone unnoticed.

Willie Goodman has been coming out to help clean up Lincoln Cemetery for most of his life. He hasn't been able to come out as often as he'd like since his stroke.

"I figure if I could cut around two or three graves it'll help a little bit. I wish I could do a whole lot more but I don't have the money or equipment to do nothing. I can't buy equipment now," said Goodman.

The job is definitely bigger than one man. The Lincoln Cemetery Rehabilitation Authority is in charge of the site, but it depends on volunteers to get the job done.

"What's happening this summer is before we can get one section cut and it rains on us. We can't get that one completely cut before the next section," said Philip Taunton with the Rehabilitation Authority.

But others are looking to help as well. The Montgomery Sunrise Rotary Club is working on a campaign to make a start to clean up the area.

"We're not really trying to cut weeds. We're trying to maybe define the border. We know it's been here as an African American cemetery over 100 years. There's maybe 7,000 people buried here," said David O'Meara with the Rotary Club.

But there's still a lot of work to be done. And you can bet that you'll see Goodman helping out any way he can.

"From now on as long as the lord gives me strength and health and I know what I'm doing i'll be out here doing it. I ain't looking for no accolades because I've been doing this for years. I didn't just start," said Goodman.
