Vigil For One Year Anniversary Of Georgiana Woman's Murder
Family and friends of Dorothy Leatherwood gathered as a way to keep her memory alive on the first anniversary of her murder.
The Leatherwood family says they are still trying to deal with the fact that the matriarch of their family is gone, but the candlelight vigil is a way to say goodbye.
Judy Pugh, Dorothy Leatherwood's sister, says, "Even though she's gone, she's still alive with us, and we just wanted to acknowledge that."
At the vigil family and friends spoke about Leatherwood's zesty personality, and her ability to put a smile on everyone's face.
A community member who attended the vigil says, "She was just like an aunt to me, a mother to me, I tell you she always had something funny to say, and she'd come up and give you a hug."
Pugh seconded the sentiment by saying, "She could tell you something that shouldn't even be funny, but it turns out funny."
The District Attorney's office says, Shawn McClain, Leatherwood's neighbor, who is charged with raping and stabbing the 72 year old woman to death in her home, is not eligible for the death penalty because his I.Q. is well below 70, which is required for execution.
After prayer, song, and a poem, balloons were released in Leatherwood's memory as those who miss her comforted one another.
