Vice President Joe Biden was the keynote speaker at the annual Martin and Coretta King Unity Brunch at Wallace Community College in Selma.
The vice president praised the courage it took to take a stand in the face of injustice. He said what happened in Selma on Bloody Sunday in 1965 shaped the consciousness of the entire nation. He told the audience the country has come a long way-- but the work is not over.
"We can't let our guard down, " said Biden. "Section five of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Strom Thurmond voted for re-authorization and yet it's being challenged in the Supreme Court of the United States of America as we stand here today."
Jubilee organizers presented Vice President Biden with the National Unity Award at the brunch for his efforts to reach across lines of differences and bring people together.
