Troy Businesses Expect More Local Shopping in 2013

The holiday shopping season may be over, but local retailers say they saw a huge boost, and they're looking for more of the same in 2013.

If 2012 had a message from Pike County retailers, it was "shop locally."

"I do think they're making an effort to. We ask them over our radio and television commercials to try to shop locally, and I do think they're trying to do that," said Sherry Helms with The Home Gallery in Troy, which saw a 5 percent increase in sales last year.

E + Me, a new shop on the square, also grew its local base. "We were jam-packed and busy, and I just appreciate the community for supporting local shops and local business, so we had a very successful christmas season," said Chelsea Hastain, who owns E + Me.

Going into the new year, Chamber of Commerce President Kathleen Sauer says the county wants to continue that growth. One new initiative taps into a ready-made base of local shoppers--students at Troy University.

"We are going to look at discount cards for our merchants, so I think it will be very interesting. They'll purchase the discount card through the SGA, and then when they come to the business, there will be a poster that says what they offer, and it will be good for a year," said Sauer.

The Chamber of Commerce is also working with Auburn University Extension to create round table-style seminars for Pike County businesses to find out what they need to expand even more.
