2013 is officially here, and the City of Montgomery rang in the new year in style.

Thousands of people turned out for the first annual Night of Lights in the entertainment district for music, dancing, a laser light show, and fireworks.

City officials say all downtown hotels were completely booked for New Year's Eve.

They say the free event is a way to bring new visitors to the city, while supporting local businesses.

"People come from all over, not just Montgomery, and of course, we want to do this for the entire state, we know that there's other areas that do New Year's Eve events, but of course, this is something we wanted to establish for the City of Montgomery," said city events coordinator Denise Welch.

City officials say close to 5,000 people came to the Night of Lights. The City hopes to make it an annual event.
