Lowest Thanksgiving Dinner Prices In Years
Red potatoes, onions, celery, and sweet potatoes are just some of the Thanksgiving staples that shoppers say have lower prices this year.
The American Farm Bureau Federation says the cost of a classic Thanksgiving dinner this year is just over $49.00. That is down nearly 44 cents from last year and is the first price drop since 2009. Some shoppers say they have seen lower prices for vegetables.
"The sweet potatoes seem to be lower this year because they are in quite abundance," says Jeannie Handey, a Thanksgiving shopper.
The manager of Target in Montgomery says because of the price drops in vegetables, he has seen quite a few more shoppers than last year, "Over the past few weeks, we've actually seen an increase in shopping over here. Over 10% of what we did last year. So, I think that the prices are making an impact on what all people are getting," says manager, Blake Stewart.
Not only will dinner be less expensive than last year, so will some travel. AAA says gas prices are down 5 cents a gallon from last year, but some people say the cost doesn't affect their travel plans.
"We're going anyway. It doesn't really matter," says Blake Allen, a Montgomery resident who says he is looking forward to traveling to see family this year.
Even though gas prices are a bit more affordable, AAA estimates 600,000 fewer travelers on the roads this year. They also say the day before Thanksgiving will be the busiest time on the roads, with nearly 37% of travelers leaving on that day.
