A Tallassee police officer was hit by a car while directing traffic around a truck fire on Interstate 85 this morning.

The police officer was taken to a hospital, but his injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening.

The tractor-trailer truck caught fire around 2 a.m., near the Shorter exit. A section of interstate had to be closed.

State Troopers tell CBS 8 News the truck was loaded with a hazardous chemical known as silicon tretraflouride. Hazmat crews spent the morning were called to help clean up the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
