From Elmore county --A Tallassee man accused of raping eight children under the age of 12 makes his first appearance in court.

Steven Conrad heard his charges Wednesday morning at the Elmore County Court House. 109 charges relating to eight children. Four victims are family members. The youngest victim is 3 months old.

Conrad is facing 47 county of rape first degree, 48 counts of sex abuse to a child and 14 counts of sodomy first degree.

District Attorney Randall Houston says Conrad could spend the rest of his life in jail.

"He could be in jail almost forever. If you can put a number on forever," he says. "If you can put a number on forever that's about it."

Tallassee Police say Conrad admitted to sexually abusing eight children after he was arrested earlier this month.

Investigators say Conrad would form a relationship with a woman, and once the woman felt comfortable to leave Conrad alone with her child that's when they say the abuse would happen.

Police also arrested Conrad's wife, Brandy Conrad, and his two friends, Helen Ganntt and Jeffery Ray. They are accused of knowing about the alleged sexual abuse but not telling police.

"We actually have had some individuals come forward since the reports. All of those have been interviewed by child services. At this point it doesn't look like they were abused in any way, so we are looking at the original eight," says Tallassee Police Chief Jimmy Rodgers.

The judge set Conrad's bond for $5,450,000.

"It is a bond, but it is a high bond, so the chances of him getting out are not very high," says Elmore Co. Chief Deputy District Attorney C.J. Robinson.

Conrad asked the judge for an attorney, so the next step in this process is the judge will assign him an attorney.

The victims and families started counseling earlier this month. Police say they are investigating to see if there are more victims who haven't come forward.
