Storms Leave Many With Damage and Without Power

By Ashley Thompson

Storms have been rolling across parts Southeast Alabama all day, causing major damage in some areas.
Elmore County was one of the hardest hit areas with several roads blocked off due to debris. Businesses in Wetumpka suffered as a result.

Stoddards Bait and Tackle has been on Company Street in Wetumpka since 1943. It's a landmark in the city and owner Chris Carter tells us celebrities like Hank Williams Sr. and President Eisenhower have been guests. But a severe storm left Stoddard's Bait and Tackle closed for business.

"Straight line winds, definitely coming straight out of the west, took down two trees on our property," says Carter. Those trees fell on power lines that sprawled across the road.

Haynes Junior says he was just down the street from the bait shop and saw the whole thing.

"I heard another explosion down in front of the bait shop," he explains. "And then I heard a tremendous crash. I turned around and the tree was falling."

The storm left many without power including Elmore Community Hospital.

"It was an intense electrical storm," says Dale Grimes with Haynes Ambulance. "The power went out and everything's on generators, running right now."

Grimes arrived at the scene on Company Street. He cautions anyone from going near downed power lines.

"Let the crews get it cleaned up and they'll open the roads up as soon as possible. Don't touch the trees that are near the power lines, they can conduct electricity just as well."

The damage left Company Street closed to the public. Carter tells us the storm has already cost his business hundreds.

"It's already affected us pretty severely," he says. "If we get power back up, we can get our phone service, and we can get our businesses back up and running."

If you do have downed power lines or damage from large trees, contact your local law enforcement agency, do NOT try to clean it up yourself.
