The Alabama State Board of Education has released preliminary findings from an investigation into Selma City Schools.

The letter details four specific problems that investigators found while looking at the Selma City School System.

They mention a failure to report allegations of sexual misconduct on the part of a female teacher, not following graduation requirements, including administrators pressuring teachers to change grades, and disregarding standardized testing procedures. They also found faculty allowed students to interfere with instructional time by selling junk food during class, as well as school dances scheduled during the school day.

The school system has 21 days to come up with a plan for how to correct the problems they listed. State Department of Education Chief of Staff Warren Pouncy says the school system has cooperated so far.

"Hopefully with the commitment that we had from the board when I met with them last week, we'll be partnering together to put the proper supports in place to prevent anything like this from happening in Selma again," said Pouncey.

He also says that there is some flexibility with the deadline and the state plans on giving selma school officials as long as they can to come up with solutions since they've been so cooperative.

The state has been investigating the school system since June.
