In response to allegations of sexual abuse and rape at Tutwiler women's prison in Wetumpka, the state's prison commissioner has testified before a legislative prison oversight committee.
Lawmakers want answers after a report by the Equal Justice Initiative last month revealed alleged rapes of women inmates at Tutwiler prison by correctional officers.
The report also saying inmates became pregnant, and others retaliated against for reporting the abuse.
Prison Commissioner Kim Thomas told lawmakers quick action is taken after any inmate says she was a victim of abuse and those inmates have options under the Prison Elimination Act, including a toll free hotline to call and options to submit anonymous complaints.
Inmate-on-inmate violence was discussed. Three have been killed since last October, according to Dept. of Corrections reports.
