Ronnie Gilley Back on the Stand for Second Day in Corruption Retrial

By WNCF

Casino developer Ronnie Gilley told jurors about bribes he made to lawmakers in his second day of testimony in the gambling corruption retrial.

Gilley testified that bribes with senators were agreed to by using winks and nods.

The Country Crossing developer says he worked with VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor to bribe lawmakers in an effort to keep their casinos open.

He says thousands of dollars were offered up in campaign money to indicted senator Harri Anne Smith and former Senators Jim Preuitt and Larry Means.

On wire tapped phone calls, Gilley and McGregor discussed getting support for the electronic bingo bill and offering campaign support for a yes vote.

Defense attorneys say of the thousands of calls recorded by the FBI, you will not hear any of the defendants on tape offering or agreeing to any bribe.

“As I've said before the test of any witness is cross examination so that's where you find out where we are,” said Joe Espy, McGregor’s attorney.

Gilley and his lobbyist Jarrod Massey and Jennifer Pouncy who have also pleaded guilty, will be sentenced after their cooperation with the prosecution is complete.
