Gov. Robert Bentley says the state will investigation claims by the Equal Justice Initiative that corrections workers are physically and sexually abusing inmates at three Alabama men's prisons.
Bentley said Wednesday he won't tolerate inappropriate conduct and neither will state Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas.
The Montgomery-based Equal Justice Initiative issued a report saying it had uncovered dozens of cases of corrections officers abusing men at the Elmore Correctional Facility in Elmore; Bibb Correctional Facility in Brent and Donaldson prison near Bessemer.
Bentley says state officials followed up on an earlier report by the organization involving Tutwiler Prison for woman in Wetumpka and the state is making changes. Bentley and Thomas recently got the Legislature to appropriate $3.5 million for security improvements at Tutwiler, including cameras inside the prison.
