Remembering Alabama Businessman Bill Bates

By Glenn Halbrooks

Beloved Alabama businessman Bill Bates has died at 89, but he'll always be remembered for his love of turkeys.

Bates was known for his 900-acre turkey farm, his Bates House of Turkey restaurant off Interstate 65 in Greenville and for his yearly appearance with Clyde the turkey at the Alabama Governor's Mansion at Thanksgiving time, so that Clyde could get a pardon from becoming Thanksgiving dinner.

Bates did all of that with a smile on his face and laughter in his heart.

This is a story Alabama News Network did with Bates in 2003. We walked with him on his farm and heard all sorts of stories about the turkey business.
