A lack of money is causing hundreds of animals at the Prattville Autauga Humane Society to lose their lives. Last year, a fundraiser called 'No Room For Rover" was launched in hopes of raising money to build a bigger facility and save some of these animals.
This humane society is operating at a location too small to house all of its' animals and the consequences of doing so are becoming more and more deadly.
The Prattville Autauga Humane Society can house just 85 animals. When more are dropped off, others often have to be euthanized. It's a sad reality that workers here are trying to stop.
"The amount that we have to put down honestly is heartbreaking," says Cat Room Manager Sarah Mcammally. "I hate it. It's only going to get worse in the summer. Litter after litter after litter of puppies and kittens come in that we just don't have room for."
So they're trying to make room by building another, bigger location. Exactly one year ago, the humane society started raising money for the project. They've raised 47 thousand dollars so far but still need 103 thousand for the building. Employee Karla Austin says although adoptions have been better in 2013, finding space for incoming animals is still a major challenge.
"With the room, it's not any better because we have a lot of the cages down the hill that have been torn up," says Austin. "So we've had to use them to piece together those we can save. If we get the new building, then we can house more animals."
Julie Bisard knows just how much those at the Prattville Autauga Humane Society do for their animals. Bisard adopted a cat from there two years ago and returned to visit with the workers.
"We're bringing our cat Seymour back to see where he came from," says Bisard. "Oh, he's the joy of our life. As you can see, we're getting older and we have no children and we thoroughly enjoy him everyday."
And Bisard didn't come empty handed.
"We wanted to bring him back and show him to the people and also give them a donation. They need it and do such wonderful work and we appreciate all that they do for the animals and the people."
The Humane Society does not yet have a deadline for when they would like the new facility to be up and running but say sooner is better than later.
